Cleo Oliver is 13, a little too tall, and a little too skinny.  She's got unruly black hair and green eyes that change depending on the color she's wearing or sometimes, the weather.  (Yes, unruly black hair and green eyes, just like another kid in another book series, but she doesn't have a scar on her head and her magic doesn't come from a wand but from a makeup kit, her mother's closet and her own imagination.)

Cleo just wants to be like everyone else.  She wants to fit in.  The kids at her school in New York City usually don't notice her, and when they do, they call her names.  She's just a teen trying to figure out who she is.

It's harder still because her mother's a famous fashion model.  One afternoon, Cleo and her mom play around with some makeup and Mrs.

Cleo's best friend's mother is an actor in her first starring role on Broadway.
